English-led exam notes for Hurra!!! Po polsku 1. Podręcznik studenta. Nowa Edycja (2022), Lekcja 5, printed pp. 42–49 (PDF pages 44–51). Checked against the lesson's audio/video transcripts on printed pp. 180–181. Page references below mean printed pages.

Note

How to use these notes: Learn sections 2–9 in order, practise the speaking frames, then attempt section 12 without looking at section 13. Section 14 is your last-minute revision sheet.

Source boundary: The chapter supplies the vocabulary, three hobby structures, frequency expressions, verb tables and communication tasks. Material marked Explanation supplies English teaching, case rules or learning shortcuts that the book does not spell out here. Worked transformations and exam questions are original practice using this lesson's language, not copied textbook exercises. The recordings were checked through their printed transcripts, not listened to; these notes cannot replace actual listening/pronunciation practice.

MUST KNOW

Skill What an examiner can ask Where in the chapter
Describe activities you like Complete Lubię … with an activity pp. 42–44, exercises 1–5
Distinguish an activity, a thing you like, and an interest Change czytać książki → literaturę → literaturą p. 44, grammar and 5a–b
Choose the correct noun form Lubię muzykę, but interesuję się muzyką pp. 44–45
Keep hobby phrases intact grać w tenisa, grać na gitarze, słuchać muzyki pp. 42–43
Say how often Use zwykle, rzadko, nigdy nie… pp. 46, 48
Change a verb for the person doing it ja chcę / on chce / oni chcą pp. 47–48
Handle verbs ending in -ować pracować → pracuję / pracują pp. 47–48
Keep the second verb in dictionary form Chcę studiować, mogę mówić p. 48, exercise 14
Complete the revision profiles and person-ending table Recognise interests, activities, ages and verb endings p. 49, Czy już to umiesz? — “Can you do this already?”

LIKELY TO BE TESTED

  • Ask and answer about yourself and another person: lubię → lubi.
  • Speak politely: Czy lubi pani…?; address a group politely: Gdzie państwo pracują?
  • Choose an advertisement and explain your choice using bo — because.
  • Understand phone enquiries: tickets, reservations, a book, an album, a wrong number, prices and minutes.
  • Understand P/N: prawda / nieprawda — true / false. Do not mistake an exercise's false statement for a fact about its character.
  • Recognise subject names ending in -ia and -ka and international verbs ending in -ować (pronunciation exercises 6 and 12a).

Useful vocabulary: hobbies and places in section 2; subjects such as geografia and informatyka; w wolnym czasie — in free time; wieczorem — in the evening; w weekend / w weekendy — at the weekend / on weekends; na wakacjach — on holiday; bo — because; albo — or; też — also; szczególnie — especially; na przykład — for example; dlaczego? — why?

Tip

Explanation — exam solving order: Find who does the action → choose the verb form → decide whether the next item is another verb or a noun → check the exact phrase before that noun → choose its ending.

2. Hobby vocabulary

Explanation — the minimum grammar language: A verb an action or state word, such as read, like or work can be followed by a noun a word naming a thing, person or idea, such as music. A preposition a linking word such as do, w, na or z often determines the case the form a noun takes for its job in a sentence. Learn the whole Polish phrase; an English preposition is not a reliable guide.

In the table, dictionary form means the version you can put straight after Lubię — “I like”. Examples are practice sentences using chapter vocabulary.

Polish English Grammatical structure — Explanation Example → English
chodzić do kina go to the cinema regularly do + dopełniacz genitive case, required by do: kino → kina Lubię chodzić do kina. → I like going to the cinema.

słuchać muzyki listen to music słuchać directly requires genitive the case demanded by this particular verb: muzyka → muzyki; no do Lubię słuchać muzyki rockowej. → I like listening to rock music.

mailować email No noun needed Codziennie mailuję. → I email every day.
jeździć taksówką travel by taxi No na; instrumental here, the form expressing the means of transport On jeździ taksówką. → He travels by taxi.

Important

Explanation — why those prepositions? Polish convention selects w for these games, na for playing an instrument, do for these building destinations, and z for company. The whole construction determines the case. There is no rule “na always means one case”: compare na gitarze with na koncert. Memorise these phrases rather than learning a later-chapter system of movement and location.

Warning

Explanation: Chodzić here describes habitual going, not necessarily walking all the way. Jeździć here describes repeated travel/riding. Keep chodzę do kina and jeżdżę na rowerze separate.

Subject vocabulary from p. 44 — all the following nouns are feminine the grammatical category that these words belong to, not a claim about biological sex and end in -a.

Polish English Polish English
geografia geography polityka politics
biologia biology muzyka music
chemia chemistry gramatyka grammar
historia history informatyka computer science / IT
filozofia philosophy fizyka physics
psychologia psychology matematyka mathematics
socjologia sociology statystyka statistics
geologia geology botanika botany
ekonomia economics polonistyka Polish language/literature studies
galeria gallery anglistyka English language/literature studies

Also learn literatura — literature; fotografia — photography; kino — cinema; teatr — theatre; sport — sport. Explanation: Recognising a subject does not require mastering every pronunciation detail today. Preserve Polish letters: ę and ą are different endings, and ś, ć, ź, ż, ł, ó are not decorative accents.

3. The three critical hobby structures

Explanation: A bezokolicznik infinitive: the dictionary form of a verb, such as czytać, robić or studiować names an activity without saying who does it. A conjugated verb a verb changed to match I, you, she, we, etc. does say who: lubię = I like; lubi = he/she likes.

A. lubić + bezokolicznik

Rule: Change lubić for the person. Leave the following activity in dictionary form.

Example

Book example, p. 44: Anna lubi czytać książki. — Anna likes reading books.

Explanation: Anna → lubi. What activity? → czytać. Read what? → książki. Only the first verb changes for Anna.

Change Anna to “I”: Lubię czytać książki. The activity czytać książki stays intact.

B. lubić + biernik

Biernik accusative: the noun form required for the thing you like in an affirmative lubić sentence follows lubić when you name a thing directly.

Book example, p. 44: Anna lubi literaturę. — Anna likes literature.

Explanation: Dictionary noun literaturaliteraturę. There is no activity verb between lubi and the noun. With a describing word, change both: polska literatura → Lubię polską literaturę.

C. interesować się + narzędnik

Narzędnik instrumental: the noun form required for the subject you are interested in follows interesować się.

Book example, p. 44: Anna interesuje się literaturą. — Anna is interested in literature.

Explanation: Change interesować for Anna → interesuje. Retain się a required small word belonging to this verb; do not translate it as “herself” here. Change literatura → literaturą. There is no Polish “in” before the interest.

Important

Explanation — find what controls the noun:

Lubię muzykę.lubię controls muzykę.

Lubię słuchać muzyki.lubię requires the activity słuchać; słuchać controls muzyki.

Interesuję się muzyką.interesuję się controls muzyką.

The English idea “music” stays the same; the Polish ending records its grammatical job.

Worked three-way transformations

Read across, then cover two columns and reconstruct them. These follow the topic associations in exercise 5a.

A: activity I like B: thing I like C: subject I am interested in
Lubię czytać książki. Lubię literaturę. Interesuję się literaturą.
Lubię chodzić do kina. Lubię kino. Interesuję się kinem.
Lubię uprawiać sport. Lubię sport. Interesuję się sportem.
Lubię robić zdjęcia. Lubię fotografię. Interesuję się fotografią.
Lubię śpiewać i grać na gitarze. Lubię muzykę. Interesuję się muzyką.
Lubię podróżować po Polsce. Lubię geografię. Interesuję się geografią.

Note

Explanation — meaning is related, not identical. Liking travel does not logically prove an interest in geography. These are the book's practice associations. In a transformation question, use the topic requested; in a personal answer, say what is true for you.

Difficult worked change: “We like taking photos” → “We like photography” → “We are interested in photography.”

Lubimy robić zdjęcia → Lubimy fotografię → Interesujemy się fotografią.

Explanation: “We” changes lubię → lubimy and interesuję → interesujemy. It does not make the singular topic “photography” plural. The case change is still fotografię → fotografią.

Transformation drill route: For each row, practise A→B, B→C, C→B, B→A, A→C and C→A. Then say all three with ona and with my. Keep the requested person constant. Unanswered versions appear in section 12.

4. Biernik required in this chapter

Explanation: Start from the mianownik nominative: the dictionary form of a noun, used as your starting point. Decide its gender its grammatical category: masculine, feminine or neuter. Then choose the accusative form for the direct thing liked in an affirmative sentence.

Affirmative lubić + ...
        |
+-- activity verb? --> dictionary verb; preserve its own phrase
        | Lubię słuchać muzyki.
        |
+-- noun directly? --> BIERNIK (accusative)
                               |
                               +-- feminine -a --> -ę
                               |   muzyka --> muzykę
                               |   adjective -a --> -ą
                               |
+-- masculine thing --> usually unchanged here
                               |   sport --> sport
                               |
                               +-- neuter --> unchanged here
                               |   kino --> kino
                               |
+-- plural things --> learn chapter forms
                                   książki, gazety, filmy, komputery

An adjective a word describing a noun, such as Polish, new or classical must match its noun. Explanation: The feminine noun and its describing word do not take identical accusative endings.

Dictionary form After affirmative lubię What happened?
literatura literaturę Feminine noun: -a → -ę
fotografia fotografię Final a → ę; retain i
muzyka klasyczna muzykę klasyczną Noun ; adjective
polska muzyka polską muzykę Same rule, adjective before noun
nowa książka nową książkę New book: adjective , noun
sport sport Masculine nonliving thing: unchanged
polski teatr polski teatr Masculine nonliving thing and adjective: unchanged
kino kino Neuter noun: unchanged
polskie kino polskie kino Neuter noun and adjective: unchanged
książki kryminalne książki kryminalne Chapter's plural thing forms remain unchanged

Book anchors: Anna lubi literaturę; Lubię kino (p. 44), lubi muzykę klasyczną (p. 46), Lubię też komputery (p. 49).

Warning

Explanation — two boundaries:

  1. The masculine “unchanged” shortcut is for these ordinary nonliving things. The chapter's game phrases are grać w tenisa / w brydża. Memorise them; do not “correct” them to w tenis / w brydż. People/animals need additional rules not developed here.
  2. The table is for affirmative liking. Direct objects after a negated verb can change to genitive a different noun case used after negation in this situation: Lubię muzykę → Nie lubię muzyki. This is an added boundary explanation, not a new lesson unit. For your own negative answers, the chapter's Nie lubię tańczyć / Nie lubię chodzić do teatru avoids that extra system.

Example

Explanation: polska muzyka → Lubię polską muzykę.

lubię → noun directly → accusative → feminine adjective + feminine noun .

Trap: Lubię polską muzyką incorrectly uses the interest ending on the noun.

5. Narzędnik required in this chapter

Explanation: After interesować się, use instrumental the form marking the subject of your interest. It does not mean “using an instrument” in this construction. The verb requires it.

Type Noun change Adjective change Full transformation
Feminine -a -a → -ą -a → -ą polska muzyka → Interesuję się polską muzyką.
Masculine consonant Usually add -em -y/-i → -ym/-im polski teatr → Interesuję się polskim teatrem.
Neuter -o -o → -em -e → -ym/-im polskie kino → Interesuję się polskim kinem.
The lesson's język język → językiem polski → polskim język polski → Interesuję się językiem polskim.

Explanation: Polski/polskie → polskim uses -im after k. The i in językiem matters too. Do not invent językem. This is a focused table for chapter examples, not every Polish noun ending.

Difficult examples, one change at a time

These recombine chapter vocabulary. Translate the phrase first, then check both endings.

Starting phrase → English “I like…” “I am interested in…”
polska muzyka → Polish music Lubię polską muzykę. Interesuję się polską muzyką.
muzyka klasyczna → classical music Lubię muzykę klasyczną. Interesuję się muzyką klasyczną.
muzyka rockowa → rock music Lubię muzykę rockową. Interesuję się muzyką rockową.
literatura angielska → English literature Lubię literaturę angielską. Interesuję się literaturą angielską.
polityka europejska → European politics Lubię politykę europejską. Interesuję się polityką europejską.
polskie kino → Polish cinema Lubię polskie kino. Interesuję się polskim kinem.
nowy teatr → a new theatre Lubię nowy teatr. Interesuję się nowym teatrem.
sport → sport Lubię sport. Interesuję się sportem.
fotografia → photography Lubię fotografię. Interesuję się fotografią.
geografia → geography Lubię geografię. Interesuję się geografią.
ekonomia → economics Lubię ekonomię. Interesuję się ekonomią.
informatyka → computer science Lubię informatykę. Interesuję się informatyką.

Example

Explanation — several interests: Interesujemy się literaturą angielską, muzyką rockową i polskim kinem. — We are interested in English literature, rock music and Polish cinema.

interesujemy się → interests as nouns → instrumental the required case for every item in this listliteraturą angielską, muzyką rockową, polskim kinem. The word i — “and” — does not reset the rule.

Other chapter constructions using the same case — Explanation:

  • spotykać się z kolegami — meet with friends: z meaning “with” requires instrumental; learn kolegami as the supplied plural form.
  • podróżować z rodziną — travel with family: rodzina → rodziną.
  • dyskutować z profesorem — discuss with a professor: profesor → profesorem.
  • jeździć taksówką — travel by taxi: taksówka → taksówką expresses the means of transport.
  • Revision profiles also use jestem dziennikarką / emerytem / uczennicą — I am a journalist / retiree / school student. Recognise these identity phrases; the lesson's main target is interests.

Warning

Explanation: Się does not automatically require instrumental. Compare interesuję się językiem polskim with the book's uczę się języka polskiego — I am learning Polish. The whole verb sets the rule. Learn the latter as a fixed phrase here.

6. Jak często?

Jak często? — How often? These frequency expressions words that say how regularly something happens are on pp. 46 and 48.

Polish English Example → English
zawsze always Zawsze wieczorem czytam książki. → I always read books in the evening.
codziennie every day Codziennie gram na gitarze. → I play the guitar every day.
zwykle usually Zwykle w weekend chodzę na basen. → I usually go to the pool at the weekend.
często often Często spotykam się z kolegami. → I often meet up with friends.
bardzo często very often Bardzo często podróżuję. → I travel very often.
od czasu do czasu from time to time Od czasu do czasu gram w tenisa. → I play tennis from time to time.
rzadko rarely Rzadko chodzę do teatru. → I rarely go to the theatre.
bardzo rzadko very rarely Bardzo rzadko oglądam telewizję. → I watch TV very rarely.
nigdy never Nigdy nie tańczę. → I never dance.

Note

Explanation: Codziennie measures days; zawsze means every relevant occasion. They are not interchangeable points on a strict percentage scale. Rzadko already means rarely and normally takes an affirmative verb: Rzadko pływam.

Explanation — safe word order:

[person, optional] + [how often] + [verb] + [rest]
Ja często czytam książki.
                    Nigdy nie czytam ...

Często chodzę do kina and Chodzę często do kina are both possible. Start with the frequency word for an easy exam answer. Polish often omits ja because chodzę already tells you “I”.

Important

NIGDY + NIE + verb: Nigdy nie pracuję w weekendy. — I never work on weekends.

Explanation: English uses “never” alone; standard Polish needs nie as well. Nigdy pracuję is wrong. Nie normally sits immediately before the verb being negated: Nigdy nie chodzę do kina.

Transformation: Często chodzę do kina → Rzadko chodzę do kina → Nigdy nie chodzę do kina.

Difficult book anchor (p. 46): Nigdy nie słucha muzyki dyskotekowej — He never listens to disco music. Explanation: nigdy needs nie; słuchać already requires muzyki dyskotekowej, even without negation. Do not infer that nigdy itself directly chooses the noun ending.

7. Present-tense conjugation MASTER TABLE

Koniugacja conjugation: changing a verb to match the person doing it. Czas teraźniejszy present tense: here, forms describing present actions or habits. The book groups verbs by their ja/ty forms, not by one universal dictionary-ending rule (p. 47).

Explanation — people: ja = I; ty = you, one person informally; on/ona/ono = he/she/it; my = we; wy = you, more than one person informally; oni/one = they. Oni includes male people; one refers to other groups. All verbs below use the same verb form for oni and one.

Pattern; dictionary verb → meaning ja ty on/ona/ono my wy oni/one
-m, -sz: mieszkać → live/reside mieszkam mieszkasz mieszka mieszkamy mieszkacie mieszkają
-m, -sz: rozumieć → understand rozumiem rozumiesz rozumie rozumiemy rozumiecie rozumieją
-m, -sz: czytać → read czytam czytasz czyta czytamy czytacie czytają
-m, -sz: jeść → eat jem jesz je jemy jecie jedzą
-m, -sz: wiedzieć → know information wiem wiesz wie wiemy wiecie wiedzą
-ę, -isz: mówić → speak mówię mówisz mówi mówimy mówicie mówią
-ę, -isz: lubić → like lubię lubisz lubi lubimy lubicie lubią
-ę, -isz: chodzić → go habitually chodzę chodzisz chodzi chodzimy chodzicie chodzą
-ę, -ysz: tańczyć → dance tańczę tańczysz tańczy tańczymy tańczycie tańczą
-ę, -ysz: uczyć się → learn uczę się uczysz się uczy się uczymy się uczycie się uczą się
-ę, -esz: chcieć → want chcę chcesz chce chcemy chcecie chcą
-ę, -esz: pisać → write piszę piszesz pisze piszemy piszecie piszą
-ę, -esz: móc → can/be able to mogę możesz może możemy możecie mogą
-ę, -esz; -ować: studiować → study at university studiuję studiujesz studiuje studiujemy studiujecie studiują
-ę, -esz; -ować: pracować → work pracuję pracujesz pracuje pracujemy pracujecie pracują

How to recognise and build the patterns — Explanation

A stem the part of a verb that carries its basic meaning before its changing ending sometimes changes spelling. An ending the final part that marks who does the action must belong to the correct pattern.

Pattern recognised from ja / ty Endings in person order: ja, ty, on, my, wy, oni Build it and watch for…
-m / -sz -m, -sz, no extra ending, -my, -cie, -ją Use czyta- or mieszka-; rozumie- gives rozumieją. Special “they” forms: jedzą, wiedzą.
-ę / -isz -ę, -isz, -i, -imy, -icie, -ą mówię/lubię retain written i before ę; mówią/lubią retain it before ą. chodzę/chodzą versus chodzisz/chodzi.
-ę / -ysz -ę, -ysz, -y, -ymy, -ycie, -ą tańcz- and ucz- take y in the middle four forms: tańczymy, uczycie.
-ę / -esz -ę, -esz, -e, -emy, -ecie, -ą Learn the present stem: pisz-; chc-; mog- in I/they but moż- in you/he/we/you-plural.
Regular chapter -ować verbs -uję, -ujesz, -uje, -ujemy, -ujecie, -ują Replace dictionary -ować with the whole ending shown; see section 8.

Warning

Explanation — recognition is not guessing from “-ać”. Czytać → czytam, but pisać → piszę. Learn each new verb as dictionary form + I + you: pisać — piszę — piszesz. The infinitive ending alone is not always enough.

Stem changes and irregularities to memorise — Explanation:

  • jeść: jem, jesz, je, jemy, jecie, then jedzą, not jeją.
  • wiedzieć: wiem, wiesz, wie, wiemy, wiecie, then wiedzą, not wieją.
  • rozumieć: rozumiem, not rozumię; rozumieją, not rozumią.
  • pisać: dictionary pisa- becomes present pisz- in every person: piszę, piszą.
  • móc: mogę/mogą, but możesz/może/możemy/możecie. Both the ó → o change and g/ż difference matter.
  • chcieć: chcę/chcą, but chcesz/chce/chcemy/chcecie. Chcę = I want; chce = he/she wants.
  • lubić/mówić: lubię/mówię, not lubę/mówę; lubią/mówią, not lubą/mówą.
  • chodzić: chodzę, not chodzię. Do not copy lubię mechanically.
  • uczyć się: carry się through every person. Uczymy się = we learn. Uczymy without it can mean we teach.

Formal address and the revision table

Explanation: Pan/pani polite “you” addressing one man/woman takes the on/ona verb form, although English translates it as “you”. Państwo polite “you” addressing a group takes the oni/one form in this lesson.

Informal Formal English
Czy możesz mówić wolniej? Czy może pan/pani mówić wolniej? Can you speak more slowly?
Co studiujesz? Co pan/pani studiuje? What do you study?
Gdzie pracujecie? Gdzie państwo pracują? Where do you work?

P. 49's zaimki pronouns: words such as I, you and they table summarises liczba pojedyncza singular: one person or thing and liczba mnoga plural: more than one:

Person Ending cue in the revision table
ja -m / -ę / -ię
ty -sz
on/ona/ono; pan/pani -ø — no extra person suffix the zero symbol means there is no additional person marker; the full verb can still end in a vowel
my -my
wy -cie
oni/one; państwo -ą; visible full endings include -ją/-ią/-zą

Extra activity forms needed outside the book's master table

Explanation: The table on p. 47 is not every verb used in the lesson. These complete your ability to use the hobby list.

  • Regular -am/-asz verbs: grać, słuchać, oglądać, spotykać się, uprawiać, pływać, biegać, śpiewać. Remove final ć and add m, sz, nothing, my, cie, ją: gram, grasz, gra, gramy, gracie, grają; spotykam się … spotykają się.
  • robić: robię, robisz, robi, robimy, robicie, robią — do/make.
  • jeździć: jeżdżę, jeździsz, jeździ, jeździmy, jeździcie, jeżdżą — travel/ride habitually. I/they have żdż; the middle four have źdz.
  • Useful exercise frames: wybieram / wybiera — I choose / he or she chooses; myślę / myśli — I think / he or she thinks; dzwonię / dzwoni — I call / he or she calls; siedzę / siedzi — I sit or stay / he or she sits or stays.

8. -ować verbs

Explanation: The verb uses one shape in the dictionary and another in the present. Do not attach a person ending to the complete dictionary word. For the regular -ować verbs practised here, replace -ować with -uj- + the person ending.

studi-ować dictionary form: to study
studi-uj-ę I study
studi-uj-esz you study
studi-uj-e he/she studies
studi-uj-emy we study
studi-uj-ecie you (plural) study
studi-uj-ą they study

studiować → studiuję → studiujesz → studiuje → studiujemy → studiujecie → studiują

Tip

Explanation: Cross out exactly ować, retain everything before it, then add uję, ujesz, uje, ujemy, ujecie, ują. In studiować, the retained part is studi-, including its i. The -ować “disappears” because it belongs to the dictionary form, which you are replacing with a present-tense form.

Dictionary verb → English ja ty on/ona my wy oni/one
pracować → work pracuję pracujesz pracuje pracujemy pracujecie pracują
podróżować → travel podróżuję podróżujesz podróżuje podróżujemy podróżujecie podróżują
telefonować → telephone telefonuję telefonujesz telefonuje telefonujemy telefonujecie telefonują
interesować się → be interested interesuję się interesujesz się interesuje się interesujemy się interesujecie się interesują się
kontrolować → check/control kontroluję kontrolujesz kontroluje kontrolujemy kontrolujecie kontrolują
planować → plan planuję planujesz planuje planujemy planujecie planują
dyskutować → discuss dyskutuję dyskutujesz dyskutuje dyskutujemy dyskutujecie dyskutują

Worked change: Anna pracuje → Anna i Magda pracują. — Anna works → Anna and Magda work. Explanation: Two people → “they” → -ują. In contrast, My pracujemy — we work — requires -ujemy.

Other p. 48 practice verbs: mailować — email; surfować — surf; koniugować — conjugate/change verb forms; dekorować — decorate; kreować — create; interpretować — interpret; funkcjonować — function; stresować — stress someone; negocjować — negotiate; protestować — protest; specjalizować się — specialise; analizować — analyse; argumentować — argue a case. Apply the same replacement: analizuję, negocjują, specjalizujemy się.

Warning

Explanation: Do not write pracowam, studiowuję or interesowuję się. Also distinguish ja pracuję, ona pracuje, one pracują. A missing or incorrect tail on the vowel changes the person.

9. Modal verbs

Modal verb a verb expressing ideas such as wanting or being able to do another action. Explanation: Chcieć and móc work this way. Lubić expresses preference rather than being a modal in the strict sense, but it uses the same “first verb changes, second stays in dictionary form” pattern here.

Structure Example English
chcieć + infinitive dictionary action word Chcę studiować. I want to study.
móc + infinitive Mogę mówić. I can speak / am able or allowed to speak.
lubić + infinitive Lubię podróżować. I like travelling.

Example

Explanation — why “Chcę studiuję” is wrong: Chcę already says I want. Studiuję says I study. Combining them gives the equivalent of “I want I study.” Polish requires the second verb to name the action: Chcę studiować.

Change the person: Ona chce studiować. My chcemy studiować. Oni chcą studiować. Only chcieć changes.

Difficult chain — Explanation: Chcę dobrze mówić po polsku. — I want to speak Polish well. Chcę identifies “I”; dobrze means “well”; mówić stays in dictionary form; po polsku is the fixed expression “in Polish”.

Czy możecie mówić wolniej? — Can you all speak more slowly? “You all” → możecie; action → mówić, not mówicie. Wolniej = more slowly.

Note

Explanation: Móc often concerns possibility or permission. Learn the book's request Czy może pan mówić wolniej? as a whole. These notes do not introduce a separate later system for expressing learned abilities.

10. Speaking/writing templates

Replace the bracketed slot with a complete phrase you already know. Explanation: A question using “you” normally needs an answer using “I”.

Question → English Safe answer English
Co lubisz robić? → What do you like doing? Lubię [czytać książki] i [robić zdjęcia]. I like reading books and taking photos.
Czym się interesujesz? → What are you interested in? Interesuję się [muzyką rockową]. I am interested in rock music.
Jak często chodzisz do kina? → How often do you go to the cinema? Od czasu do czasu chodzę do kina. I go to the cinema from time to time.
Co robisz w wolnym czasie? → What do you do in your free time? W wolnym czasie [czytam książki] i [słucham muzyki]. In my free time I read books and listen to music.
Czy lubisz pływać? → Do you like swimming? Tak, bardzo lubię pływać. / Nie, nie lubię pływać. Yes, I really like swimming. / No, I don't like swimming.
Czy lubisz muzykę? → Do you like music? Tak, lubię muzykę, szczególnie rockową. Yes, I like music, especially rock music.
Co lubi robić twój kolega? → What does your friend like doing? Mój kolega lubi [grać w tenisa]. My friend likes playing tennis.

Czym “what” in the instrumental form: the question word matching interesować się is your clue in Czym się interesujesz? Explanation: You can also say Czym interesujesz się?, but memorise the book-compatible natural frame above. Się stays with the construction; do not begin an answer with it.

Warning

Explanation: After W wolnym czasie…, name what you actually do using a person form: czytam. After Lubię…, name the activity using its dictionary form: czytać.

A short answer you can adapt

Example

Lubię czytać książki i słuchać muzyki. Interesuję się literaturą i muzyką rockową. Codziennie czytam. Od czasu do czasu chodzę do kina. Nigdy nie gram w tenisa.

I like reading books and listening to music. I am interested in literature and rock music. I read every day. From time to time I go to the cinema. I never play tennis.

Choosing an advertisement (p. 45)

Recognise the options: biuro turystyczne — travel agency; księgarnia — bookshop; klub karate — karate club; korty tenisowe — tennis courts; pływalnia / basen — swimming pool; szkoła jogi — yoga school; teatr — theatre; kino — cinema; galeria fotografii — photography gallery; wystawa — exhibition; festiwal filmów — film festival. The ads also offer squash, a disco and a relaxation centre with aerobics, sauna, solarium, massage and beauty treatments.

Reading cues: zapraszamy — we invite you / welcome; codziennie — every day; bilety — tickets; rezerwacja biletów — ticket reservation; informacje i zapisy — information and registration; rabaty dla grup — group discounts. Understand these as sign/advertisement chunks.

Explanation — safe choice frame: Wybieram kino, bo lubię oglądać filmy. — I choose the cinema because I like watching films.

Another frame: Myślę, że Anna wybiera kino, bo interesuje się polskim kinem. — I think Anna chooses the cinema because she is interested in Polish cinema. Myślę, że = I think that; wybiera = chooses. Do not change interesuje to interesuję when the subject is Anna.

Explanation: Treat zarezerwować — reserve — and the price/count phrases as recognition chunks from the phone task. A full system of aspect how Polish verbs distinguish an action viewed as ongoing from an action viewed as completed and number-dependent endings is outside this lesson's grammar tables.

Transcript facts for checking comprehension: Jacek calls the cinema (ticket 15 zł; two seats), then attempts the sports number 564-78-90 but reaches a wrong number. Joanna calls the bookshop (book 32 zł), then the theatre (two seats; 26 zł per ticket). Magda asks a music shop about an album (49.99 zł). Józef calls the pool (regular ticket 10 zł; 45 minutes). These are textbook dialogue values, not current real-world prices.
